RIOT's MIKE DIMEO: Metal In America Is A Fad
October 6, 2002RIOT singer Mike DiMeo recently outlined to Britain's Live 4 Metal the differences between the metal audiences in Europe and the States and the reasons for the group's diminished success on their home turf.
"If you're a fan of hard rock music in Europe, you're fan from 13 to 30," DiMeo said. "You don't stop being a fan. If you're a fan of hard rock here in the States, it's something you grow out of. It's weird. People come to our shows in Europe that are 35, 40. We play in the States and whoever has heard of us recently come. You know, there's some older fan that will come that know the older records, but if it's not the flavor of the month — especially here in New York — you ain't getting airplay, you ain't getting nothing. In Europe, they'll still play us on the radio. They'll play us in Greece and in Italy. It's a whole different ball game over there, man. People are into metal forever. It's like a legitimate musical form. Over here, it's like a fad."
